Ile Ife town in Osun State, SW Nigeria, will host an international marathon on February 4th 2018, organisers have announced.
“The Ile Ife Heritage Marathon is a destination marathon borne out of a desire to showcase to the world the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba People through the centuries-old Ile Ife matchless iconic heritages,” says the Race Director Adedayo Akinbode on behalf of the Ile Ife Heritage Marathon Organization (IHMO).
Participants will cover 42.195km, taking off from the Obafemi Awolowo University premises and running a route that’ll put several heritage attractions in view of the crowd. Among them: the world famous bronze head locally known as “The Ori Olokun Statue”; the Oranmiyan staff; The recently installed statue of Moremi and the bust of Obafemi Awolowo, one of Nigeria’s founding fathers. The race will terminate at the Enu Owa Palace, where the athletes will be received by Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
Says His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi: “Ile Ife Heritage Marathon is a non-governmental and non-profit oriented organization with the sole aim of bringing Ile Ife –the Cradle of Yoruba Race and Nigeria into limelight in the field and Track event and to encourage a healthy living among Nigerians.”
